A man shot during Tuesday’s protest in Nairobi is now fighting for his life, according to doctors at Kenyatta Hospital.
The streets of Kenya’s capital turned chaotic after demonstrators calling for an end to police brutality were attacked by a group of motorbike riders and uniformed officers. What began as a peaceful call for justice quickly spiraled into violent confrontations.
One moment, in particular, has sparked widespread outrage—a man selling face masks was shot at close range in the head by a police officer. The shocking scene, caught on camera by eyewitnesses and journalists, sent waves of anger through the crowd and across the country. Calls for renewed demonstrations have already begun.
William Sigilai, acting head of Kenyatta Hospital, confirmed that the victim underwent surgery to remove the bullet but remains in critical condition. “He suffered a severe brain injury and is currently on life support, under continuous medical care,” he said.
The hospital treated 16 people from the protest. While nine have been discharged, seven required surgery for various injuries, including gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma.
The protests follow public outrage over the recent death of a teacher who died while in police custody, adding fuel to an already burning demand for accountability.
Amnesty International and other rights groups have condemned the police response, accusing the authorities of abandoning their duty to protect.
