Kenya’s President William Ruto Unveils New Cabinet Amid Crisis
Kenya’s President William Ruto announced a partial new cabinet on Friday in a bid to form a “broad-based” government following a month of intense and sometimes deadly protests against his administration.
In a televised address, Ruto revealed the names of 11 proposed ministers, a week after dismissing nearly his entire cabinet. This move aims to address the worst crisis of his nearly two-year presidency.
“While the events of the past month have caused tremendous anxiety, concern, and uncertainty, the crisis has presented us with a great opportunity to craft a broad-based, inclusive citizen coalition for national transformation and progress, made up of Kenyans from all walks of life,” Ruto said. “Consequently, I have started the process of forming a new broad-based cabinet to assist in driving the urgently needed and irreversible transformation of our country.”
Ruto submitted 11 names for cabinet ministers and the attorney general, all of whom will require parliamentary approval. Notably, several nominees were part of the previous government, including Kithure Kindiki, who will head the interior ministry and oversee Kenya’s police force.
