Kenyan Senator Arrested in Scholarship Scandal.
Kenyan senator Jackson Mandago has been taken into custody alongside three others on a range of charges, including theft and abuse of office. The allegations revolve around their alleged involvement in a scheme that conspired to embezzle approximately 1.1 billion Kenyan shillings ($7.6 million) designated for further education for Kenyan students in Finland and Canada.
Reports suggest that many students who had paid for study opportunities abroad have found themselves stranded in Kenya due to the scheme. Those who had already started their studies faced challenges like homelessness, expulsion, and deportation as the county government halted payments for accommodation and tuition.
The accusations surfaced during Mandago’s tenure as governor. While he has refuted claims of misappropriation, the incident has attracted attention from high-level officials. President William Ruto has urged swift repayment of the funds for the Finland and Canada Overseas Education Programme, warning of consequences for those responsible if the matter isn’t resolved promptly.
