In the northeastern Kenyan town of Elwak, bordering Somalia, an explosive attack suspected to be orchestrated by al Shabab militants has left an unknown number of people injured and reportedly killed, according to local media reports.
While police confirmed the explosion, they stated that they lacked further information, as reported by the privately owned The Star newspaper.
Details of the Monday morning attack remain unclear, but state broadcaster KBC reported that an improvised explosive device attached to a donkey was detonated outside a police station in the town.
Operations of several businesses in Elwak have come to a halt.
Equity Bank, one of Kenya’s major lenders, announced the closure of its branch in the town until “security agencies advise on when operations can resume”.
In recent months, al Shabab attacks have increased in frequency in Mandera county, where Elwak is situated.
Last month, a similar attack outside the Mandera police station resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals, including police officers and a civilian.
Additionally, another police officer was killed and two others injured after improvised explosive devices planted on donkey carts exploded near the border crossing between the county and Somalia.
