Liverpool suffered their first defeat to Everton at Goodison Park in 14 years, dealing a heavy blow to their aspirations of sending off their manager as a Premier League winner.
Jurgen Klopp’s near nine-year tenure at Liverpool is drawing to a close at the end of this season, one they had hoped to culminate with a second league title under his leadership. However, the 0-2 loss in the Merseyside derby has shattered those hopes.
Just a few weeks ago, Liverpool were on track for a potential quadruple, but their campaign has veered off course. A string of four wins in nine games saw Klopp’s side crash out of the Europa League and FA Cup, as well as losing ground in the Premier League title race.
Currently trailing leaders Arsenal by three points and just one point ahead of defending champions Manchester City, who have two games in hand, Liverpool’s prospects look dim.

Klopp offered apologies to fans after Wednesday’s defeat, acknowledging the disappointment. “We should have done better, but we didn’t,” he lamented.
The 2-0 defeat saw Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin finding the net for Everton, prompting taunts from the home crowd chanting “You lost the league at Goodison Park” after the final whistle.
Reflecting on the match, Klopp expressed disappointment with his team’s performance, particularly conceding goals from set-pieces. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for significant improvement.
As Liverpool’s quest for the quadruple falters, Klopp faces challenges of player fatigue and injuries. Despite some successes earlier in the season, the team’s form has dipped in recent weeks.
Looking ahead, Liverpool must regroup for upcoming fixtures against West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Wolverhampton Wanderers to salvage what they can from the season.
