Lady Gaga surprised everyone by performing at the Oscars on Sunday. Gaga was nominated for best song for “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick,” and while it is customary for nominated songs to be performed, producers announced last week that she would be unable to attend.
Glen Weiss, the show’s producer, explained why Gaga couldn’t perform during a press conference last week. “We have a fantastic relationship with Lady Gaga and her team,” he told Entertainment Tonight. He said she didn’t feel she “could deliver a performance at the caliber” she is used to because she is in the middle of filming the latest “Joker” movie.
Gaga, on the other hand, arrived on the red carpet just before the start of the awards show, and ET confirmed she planned to perform. She shared a section of the red carpet with BloodPop, the song’s co-writer.

Variety broke the news of her surprise performance, and the host of E’s red carpet coverage mentioned that Gaga was there to perform.
Gaga celebrated her nomination in January by posting an Instagram photo of a large bouquet. She described working on the song with BloodPop as “a deep and powerful experience that I will never forget.”

The singer and actress have been nominated for four Oscars. In 2019, she was nominated for best actress for “A Star is Born,” and won the Oscar for best song for “Shallow.” She was also nominated for best song in 2016 for “Til It Happens to You,” from the documentary “The Hunting Ground.”
Despite the buzz surrounding her appearance, as well as Rihanna’s performance of “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the Academy Awards voters went a different way: the Oscar for the best original song went to “Naatu Naatu” from “RRR.”
