Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was at his brilliant best on Wednesday night, scoring twice as Egypt defeated Djibouti 3–0 in Casablanca to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 33-year-old captain led by example, taking his tally to nine goals in the qualifiers and helping the Pharaohs establish an unassailable five-point lead in Group A with one game remaining.
Ibrahim Adel opened the scoring early in the eighth minute, before Salah doubled the lead just six minutes later. The Egyptian star then sealed the win with another goal in the 84th minute, sending fans into celebration as Egypt confirmed their spot on the global stage.
While Salah has faced challenges at Liverpool this season, with only three goals in nine matches, his international form remains unstoppable. The two-time African Footballer of the Year continues to shine for his country, just as he did last season when he helped Liverpool secure their record-equalling 20th Premier League title and claimed the Golden Boot with 29 goals.
Despite being Africa’s most decorated team with seven AFCON titles, Egypt’s World Cup history has been modest. This qualification marks their fourth appearance after 1934, 1990, and 2018.
