Dr. John Kwakye, Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), recently drew parallels between the management of Ghana’s economy and the performance of English Premier League giant Manchester United, citing both as examples of poor management leading to lackluster outcomes.
He argued that Ghana’s economic managers, much like those of Manchester United, appear to lack the necessary insight to address their respective challenges effectively.
In a recent post on X, Dr. Kwakye remarked, “It seems to me that the managers of Ghana’s economy are like the managers of Manchester United. Both seem clueless in addressing the problems confronting them, although the solutions are far from rocket science.”
He highlighted that the economic managers are promising various initiatives such as economic transformation, streamlined government, fiscal discipline, and ownership of natural resources.
Ahead of the 2024 general elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to ensure 100% Ghanaian ownership of mineral resources if elected.
Dr. Bawumia lauded the achievements of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, emphasizing the challenges faced by Ghanaians during the presidency of Mahama, including frequent power outages, rising unemployment, tariff increases, and business closures.
He highlighted the relatively stable performance of the Ghanaian Cedi against the Dollar under the NPP government compared to the previous administration.
In an interview with AfricaWatch, Dr. Bawumia underscored his commitment to stabilizing the Cedi and pledged to revolutionize the fishing sector if elected.
He also announced plans to implement tax amnesty for individuals and businesses and to provide tertiary scholarships specifically for Persons with Disability, aiming to ensure inclusivity and support for all segments of society.
