Manchester City has officially announced the return of former captain Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona. The experienced midfielder has signed a one-year contract with the Premier League champions, with an option for an additional year.
Gundogan, a key player in Pep Guardiola’s squad during his initial time with Manchester City from 2016 to 2023, left for Barcelona on a free transfer last summer. Now, at 33, he’s back at the Etihad Stadium after a successful stint with the Spanish club, where he won 14 trophies and netted 60 goals in 304 appearances.
Gundogan shared his excitement about rejoining City, saying, “My seven years at Manchester City were incredibly fulfilling, both on and off the field. Pep is the best manager in the world, and working with him makes you a better player. I’m thrilled to wear the City shirt again.”
His move from Barcelona was driven by the club’s financial issues, which made it challenging to fit new signing Dani Olmo into their budget. As one of the club’s highest earners, Gundogan’s departure will help Barcelona comply with La Liga’s financial regulations.
Despite the circumstances of his exit, Gundogan expressed his appreciation for his time at Barcelona on Instagram, stating, “Leaving is tough, but if my departure helps the club financially, it eases the sadness a bit.”
Gundogan also recently announced his retirement from international football following Germany’s exit from Euro 2024. He made 82 appearances for his national team before stepping away from international duties.
