Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has addressed Marcus Rashford’s absence from their FA Cup fourth-round victory against Newport, stating it’s an “internal matter.”
Rashford, the England forward, was absent from United’s training session on Friday due to reported illness. However, media reports emerged suggesting the 26-year-old had been spotted in nightspots in Northern Ireland on both Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
When questioned about Rashford’s absence and the subsequent internal matter during a post-match news conference on Sunday, Ten Hag responded, “It is an internal matter, and I will deal with that.”
Former Newcastle and England forward Alan Shearer commented on the situation, expressing concern about Rashford’s repeated off-field issues. Shearer emphasized the need for strong management to guide Rashford and ensure he maximizes his talent.
Marcus Rashford scored 30 goals for United last season but has struggled this term, managing only four goals. His recent celebration after scoring against Tottenham drew criticism from former United captain Roy Keane and ex-Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp.
Former England defender Micah Richards added that Rashford, as a public figure, needs to understand the attention he attracts wherever he goes. Richards highlighted the disruption caused by off-field issues, diverting attention from the game.
This incident adds to the off-field challenges Ten Hag has faced this season, including questions about Mason Greenwood’s future, an investigation into allegations against Antony of domestic abuse, and Jadon Sancho’s fallout leading to his loan move to Borussia Dortmund.
If disciplined, it won’t be the first time Rashford faces consequences under Ten Hag’s management. He was dropped from the starting lineup in November’s EFL Cup fourth-round defeat against Newcastle for celebrating his birthday in Manchester’s exclusive nightspots just hours after a disappointing defeat to Manchester City. Rashford has previously faced disciplinary measures, including being benched for oversleeping and being late for a team meeting last season.
