Manchester United Forward Mason Greenwood to Depart Old Trafford.
Mason Greenwood, the forward for Manchester United and an England player, is set to leave Old Trafford as confirmed by the Premier League club. This decision follows an investigation into allegations of attempted rape, of which Greenwood was cleared earlier this year.
In a statement released on Monday, the club stated, “All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties with him resuming his career at Manchester United.” As a result, it has been mutually agreed that a more suitable path for his career would be away from Old Trafford, and the club will collaborate with Greenwood to facilitate this transition.
The 21-year-old forward had been under suspension by the Premier League giants since January 30, 2022, in connection to allegations concerning a young woman. Images and videos were circulated online, but a criminal case was subsequently dropped.
In a media statement, Greenwood emphasized that the decision was reached through collaboration between himself, his family, and Manchester United. He stated, “The best decision for us all is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club.” Originally slated for trial on November 27, 2023, all criminal charges against him were dismissed in February.
Throughout the process, both the alleged victim’s perspective and the club’s values were taken into consideration, as stated by Manchester United. Greenwood asserted, “I did not do the things I was accused of.” He acknowledged making mistakes in his relationship and taking responsibility for the circumstances leading to the social media post. He expressed his determination to grow as a footballer, a father, and an individual, while using his talents positively both on and off the field.
Greenwood began his career in Manchester United’s academy and has represented the England national team on one occasion.
