A defect in the Central Bank of The Gambia’s system resulted in deposits of various amounts in US dollars to 27,000 commercial bank accounts.
The majority of those affected were civil servants earning at least $100 (£83) per month. They received a check for $20,000 (£16,000).
The Central Bank blamed the error on a failed data transfer system from commercial banks and has since blocked the affected accounts to allow for the reversal of the deposited funds.
This incident occurred just weeks after unidentified hackers claimed to have stolen two terabytes of vital and sensitive data from the central bank.
The authorities, on the other hand, claim that the overpayments had nothing to do with hacking.
