A massive fire broke out at the Bush Canteen, a popular dining spot at the University of Ghana, Legon, on Wednesday evening, leading to significant property damage.
Initial reports suggest that a gas explosion may have sparked the flames.
Fortunately, there were no injuries or casualties.
Videos shared on social media captured the fire raging through the canteen, with thick smoke filling the night sky.
Students and vendors nearby had to evacuate quickly as the fire intensified.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived promptly and worked diligently to control the blaze and minimize further destruction.
DOI Alex King Nartey of the GNFS reported that the fire at the Estate Block started around 9:00 PM and was brought under control within an hour.
Due to the presence of flammable materials, fire crews from Madina and Abelemkpe were deployed to assist in extinguishing the flames.
“The fire is 90% contained, and our primary focus now is to ensure it does not reignite. We dispatched four fire tenders to the site,” he stated.
He also confirmed that nearly 20 refrigerators, freezers, and spare parts were lost in the incident.
The recent increase in fire incidents across Ghana has raised concerns among authorities and citizens alike.
