Kylian Mbappe has been discharged from a U.S. hospital after recovering from a brief illness, Real Madrid confirmed on Thursday.
The French forward, who’s currently with the team in the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup, was diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis earlier in the week. The illness kept him out of Madrid’s opening match—a 1–1 draw against Al-Hilal on Wednesday.
In an official update, the club stated: “Kylian Mbappe has been released from the hospital and has rejoined the team. He’ll continue to receive treatment and will slowly reintegrate into training.”
Head coach Xabi Alonso, managing his first match with the club, had hinted before kickoff that Mbappe was improving, but the 26-year-old wasn’t cleared to play.
In his absence, Madrid B team’s Gonzalo Garcia, just 21 years old, made the most of his opportunity, netting the first goal of the match.
Real Madrid will face Pachuca in their next Club World Cup fixture on Sunday, June 22, in Charlotte. It’s still uncertain whether Mbappe will be ready in time.
The star striker, who joined Madrid last summer, quickly made his presence felt—scoring 31 goals in La Liga and claiming the European Golden Shoe. Yet despite his individual brilliance, Madrid finished the season without a major trophy.
