Davido Reflects on Meeting Chris Brown & Friendship with Hushpuppi
Davido recently opened up about two key relationships that left a mark on his life—one that propelled his music career, and another that stirred controversy.
Speaking on the Bagfuel Brigade podcast, the Afrobeats star shared the story of how his friendship with Chris Brown began. According to him, the connection came out of nowhere but ended up shaping his journey in a major way.
“Meeting Chris was a game changer for me,” he recalled. “It happened in 2018. One of Chris’s close Nigerian friends FaceTimed me while my song was playing in the background. I asked where he was, and he said, ‘At Chris Brown’s house.’ I was like, wait—what? My song?”
Things got even more surreal when Chris himself joined the call, dancing to the track. Not long after, Davido made a trip to the U.S. to meet him in person. “From the moment we met, it just clicked. We became friends, just like that,” he said.
In the same conversation, Davido also addressed his connection with Ramon Abbas—better known as Hushpuppi—who is currently serving time in the U.S. over fraud charges.
While being honest about their past friendship, Davido made it clear he had no knowledge of Hushpuppi’s activities. “He was my guy. I’d see him around. But I didn’t know what he was into,” he said. “It’s sad. He lived large, but it’s not worth being locked up.”
Davido didn’t shy away from highlighting the desperation many face in Nigeria, noting that harsh conditions sometimes push people into risky paths. “Some people just want to enjoy life, even if it’s only for a short time,” he added. “My prayers go out to him.”
Whether it’s rubbing shoulders with global icons or navigating friendships caught in controversy, Davido continues to speak with the kind of honesty that keeps fans listening.
