Ms. Chidimma Vanessa Adetshina, the newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, has vowed to make her country proud during her reign. She shared this promise during a recent visit with Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in Lagos.
Adetshina, who is both Nigerian and South African, faced significant challenges leading up to the pageant. Her decision to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria sparked xenophobic backlash in South Africa. Despite these difficulties, she emerged victorious and proudly took the title of Miss Universe Nigeria.
Expressing deep gratitude, Adetshina thanked Nigerians for their unwavering support throughout her journey. She was particularly touched by the warm hospitality she received during her time in the country, which made her experience even more special.
“I am so honored to be here,” she said. “I wear this crown with pride and am committed to making Nigeria proud.”
At 23 years old, this visit marked Adetshina’s first time in Nigeria. She was deeply moved by the kindness and warmth of the Nigerian people, who made her feel right at home.
“I’ve been eager to come to Nigeria and finally made it happen this year,” she shared. “Although I was nervous, traveling alone after 20 years away, the welcome I received was incredible. I felt instantly accepted and knew I was going to enjoy my time here. These past 10 days have been an amazing experience.”
Dr. Dabiri-Erewa commended Adetshina’s resilience, noting the challenges she faced on her path to becoming Miss Universe Nigeria. She also reminded Nigerians with dual citizenship not to take their status for granted.
“Welcome home, Chidimma. I’m confident this is just the beginning of many more achievements for you,” Dr. Dabiri-Erewa said. “To all Nigerians abroad with dual citizenship, cherish it. Nigeria has been there for you in difficult times, and your second citizenship can be a valuable asset.”
Guy Murray-Bruce, President of Silverbird Group and organizer of Miss Universe Nigeria, also praised Adetshina’s determination. He highlighted the hurdles she overcame, including xenophobic attacks, on her way to earning this prestigious title.
“Thank you for welcoming us today,” Murray-Bruce said. “Chidimma’s story is unique, especially as she holds dual citizenship. Her journey to becoming Miss Universe Nigeria is a testament to her strength and perseverance.”
