Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who recently assumed office following a contentious election, has voiced concerns about external forces attempting to fund unrest during the elections.
In a ceremony witnessed by thousands of supporters and presided over by the chief justice, President Mnangagwa took the oath of office. However, the leading opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change, opted to boycott the event, insisting on fresh elections and labeling Mnangagwa’s victory as a massive deception.
Notably, the presence of South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa at the ceremony served as an implicit endorsement, despite regional criticisms of the election process.
In his pledge, President Mnangagwa expressed his commitment to improving the living conditions of the impoverished population and upholding the constitution. His most formidable challenge, however, lies in unifying a nation marked by deep divisions.
