The Mozambican government has announced its collaboration with authorities in Moscow to probe the circumstances surrounding the passing of Russian Ambassador Alexander Surikov.
Surikov, aged 68, was discovered deceased on Saturday night at his official residence in Maputo, as per local reports. The cause of his demise remains undisclosed.
Mozambique’s public prosecutor’s office has stated its unawareness of any purported refusal by Russian authorities to perform an autopsy on the ambassador’s body, as reported locally.
President Filipe Nyusi expressed in a statement that Surikov’s passing has left a significant void, praising him as a committed diplomat with exceptional qualities, according to local media.
Surikov had been appointed to the position in 2017.
