Nigeria recently said goodbye to one of its most cherished cultural figures, Onyeka Onwenu, often affectionately called the “Elegant Stallion,” who was laid to rest on Friday. The legendary artist, known for her work as a musician, actress, broadcaster, and activist, passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72.
Onwenu’s death occurred at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja, where she collapsed during an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. Her passing deeply affected many, leading to an outpouring of tributes from around the world.
A funeral service was held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, drawing a large crowd of dignitaries, celebrities, and admirers. After the service, Onyeka Onwenu was laid to rest in a private ceremony at a vault in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Notable attendees included Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, and Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, both of whom paid their respects.
Onwenu was celebrated not only as a pioneering musician with numerous hits but also as a broadcaster, actress, and strong advocate for women’s rights and social justice. Her contributions to the arts and her unwavering activism have left a lasting impact on the nation.
She is survived by her two sons, who, along with countless fans and admirers, mourn the loss of a remarkable woman whose influence will continue to inspire generations to come.
