Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has shut down claims that she deliberately released her sex tape to stay in the spotlight.
Back in October 2021, the singer became the subject of intense public attention after a private video of hers was leaked online by someone attempting to blackmail her. Refusing to bow to the pressure of extortion, she was met with heavy criticism from some people who accused her of using the scandal for attention.
Speaking recently on American radio station Hot 97, Tiwa addressed the controversy directly.
“I was bashed for my sex video. A lot of people thought I was trying to gain sympathy. Even people with platforms were horrible and blamed me. They said I did it to stay relevant. If that were true, I’d have been intentional about it — I’d have used proper lighting, better lingerie, and my facial expressions would have been on point,” she said.
Tiwa also spoke about a past relationship with a well-known figure, revealing how secrecy made it difficult to navigate. During an interview on The JMatt Show, she explained that the man — who was also in the limelight — demanded that they keep their relationship completely hidden.
At first, she agreed, but things soon became uncomfortable. He would insist they act like strangers in public, even mingling with other people while she was around, making it impossible for her to react without exposing them.
Looking back, Tiwa admitted that the situation was unsettling and draining, as it forced her into silence while the relationship played out in the shadows.
