Seun Kuti, the Afrobeat artist, shared a unique perspective on his family’s role in the propagation of Christianity in Nigeria. According to him, the Anglican Church in Nigeria has its roots in his family’s endeavors.
Despite the Kuti family’s historical involvement in establishing the Anglican Church through figures like Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti (his great-grandfather) and Josiah Ransome-Kuti (his grandfather) during the colonial era, Seun Kuti identifies himself as a practitioner of traditional African (juju) worship rather than a follower of Christianity.
In a recent episode of the Spill With Phyna podcast, the Afrobeat musician acknowledged his family’s role in spreading Christianity across Nigeria but emphasized that he personally does not identify as a Christian. He used this platform to advocate for a return to ancestral beliefs, encouraging fellow Africans to reconnect with their traditional roots.
Seun Kuti said,
“Na my family start the Anglican side of Christianity in this country, if you look back at it. We are among the pioneers.
So, we’ve been there, we’ve done that and we’ve moved on. And we hope Africans can follow suit. I don’t go to church. Na juju me I dey do.”
