Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up about life, legacy, and his unshakable passion for football — even as his family encourages him to retire. The Portuguese icon, now 40, made the heartfelt revelation on Monday night while accepting the Prestígio Award at the Portugal Football Globes in Lisbon, an event celebrating his extraordinary contributions to the national team.
The Al Nassr forward, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players, used the moment to reflect on his 22-year journey with Portugal, expressing how much pride he still feels every time he puts on the national shirt.
“I’ve been with the national team for 22 years — that alone says a lot about my love for this jersey and my hunger to keep competing for Portugal,” Ronaldo said during his acceptance speech.
“If it were up to me, I’d play only for the national team. Representing your country is the ultimate honour in football.”
With over 900 career goals and countless records to his name, Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time top scorer. Yet, despite his age, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner made it clear he’s not ready to hang up his boots just yet.
“My family keeps telling me I’ve done enough, that I don’t need to reach 1,000 goals,” he said with a smile.
“But I still have the fire. I’m contributing, performing well, and helping both my club and my country — so why stop now? When I do retire, I’ll know I gave everything. For now, I’m just enjoying every moment.”
Ronaldo also shared that his mindset has evolved with time. Once obsessed with records, he now focuses more on the joy of the game and the unpredictability of life.
“I no longer see it as an obsession,” he admitted. “With age, you learn to live day by day. Football — and life — can change in a second, so I’ve stopped making long-term plans.”
Looking ahead, the veteran striker reaffirmed his commitment to Portugal’s World Cup qualification campaign.
“Our goal is clear — to win the next two matches and book our ticket to the 2026 World Cup,” he said confidently.
Portugal is set to face Ireland this Saturday before hosting Hungary next week, with Ronaldo expected to lead the team once again as captain — proof that even after two decades at the top, the legend’s flame still burns bright.
