The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II recently shared a captivating story about his unexpected path to becoming king, revealing that he was unaware of his royal heritage until fate intervened and called him to the throne.
Celebrating twenty-five years as the ruler of the Ashanti people, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II recounted the series of events that kept him oblivious to his royal destiny, ensuring that his upbringing was far removed from the grandeur of the Manhyia Palace.
During his 74th birthday thanksgiving service, the monarch disclosed a touching revelation from his mother, who had initially contemplated not bringing him into the world due to marital difficulties fueled by accusations against his father. It was only through the intervention of his uncle, the late Asantehene Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II, that his mother decided to stay.
“My mum confided in me that she almost didn’t have me. She revealed that due to my father’s infidelity, she considered leaving the marriage after my older sibling was born. She mentioned that my uncle, the then Asantehene, Osei Agyemang Prempeh, persuaded her otherwise, promising to address her concerns,” recounted the Asantehene.

In a carefully orchestrated plan involving family members, Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II ensured that the young prince remained unaware of his royal lineage, steering him away from the typical path of succession. Notably, Otumfuo revealed how his uncle redirected him from attending his preferred school, Prempeh College, and instead enrolled him in Sefwi Wiawso Secondary School, where he experienced strict discipline under the guidance of a stern teacher.
After completing his secondary education, Otumfuo pursued further studies abroad, residing with relatives on his father’s side. It was during this period that the intricate plan for his ascension to the throne began to unfold.
Looking back on his unconventional upbringing and the orchestrated events leading to his kingship, Otumfuo remarked, “It was only later that everything fell into place, leading me to where I am today.”
The revelation of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s remarkable journey to kingship offers insight into the complexities and hidden stories that shape the fate of royalty in the Ashanti culture. As the celebrations for his silver jubilee continue, the Asantehene’s narrative stands as a testament to the enduring tradition and deep-seated complexities of royal heritage in Ghana’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
