Following a confrontation with a man brandishing a knife in central London’s Leicester Square, two police officers were stabbed.
The police were receiving medical care in a hospital. According to the Metropolitan police, “We await additional updates on their status.”
Stuart Cundy, a deputy assistant commissioner, stated that after tackling a man, the officers “sustained substantial stab wounds” and that a knife had been found at the scene.
On suspicion of causing great bodily harm and assaulting an emergency responder, a Taser was used, and a guy was taken into custody. Police say that after being treated at a hospital, the suspect was brought there and is still there.
The incident occurred as the UK was getting ready to face a significant security issue leading up to the Queen’s burial on Monday.
The attack in Soho was described as “utterly terrible” and “disgraceful” by Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London.
Khan urged anyone with knowledge to come forward and that he had spoken with the incoming police commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, about the event.
At this crucial time for our country, “these courageous officers were performing their duty and assisting the public,” the mayor stated.
Attacks on police will not be condoned, and anyone responsible will be apprehended and punished.
The mayor stated a member of the public “did the right thing” by approaching a police officer, “and police officers responded,” when discussing the event on BBC News on Friday morning.
