The UK government has proposed controversial new legislation to prevent tens of thousands of migrants from entering the country illegally in boats each year.
Suella Braverman, the Interior Minister, stated that the migrants would be detained and deported as soon as they arrived.
They would only be able to claim asylum if they were returned to their countries of origin or to Rwanda, which has signed an agreement to take them in despite legal challenges.
Ms. Braverman stated that this was the only way to prevent people from entering the UK.
According to human rights organizations, the law risks criminalizing thousands of genuine refugees.
The minister has acknowledged that the legislation may violate human rights laws.
Meanwhile, the opposition Labour Party has called the new bill a sham, accusing the Conservatives of failing to address the issue properly.
