The government of Governor Alex Otti has assured workers in Abia State that a new minimum wage will take effect in October 2024. This announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.
Speaking at a press conference in Umuahia, Kanu confirmed that the wage increase would apply to all categories of workers, fulfilling Governor Otti’s promise to prioritize the welfare of the workforce in Abia.
The Commissioner highlighted that this decision is a reflection of the administration’s dedication to improving the lives of its employees. This comes after the Federal Government recently approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 following negotiations with labor representatives.
In addition to the wage increase, Kanu announced that the state government will begin constructing modern court facilities across all 17 Local Government Areas within two weeks to ensure a smooth administration of justice.
He also shared that a 19.4-kilometer road project in Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas, part of the RAMP project, will soon commence under the Governor’s leadership.
Kanu credited Abia State’s top performance in the recent National Examination Council (NECO) results to the ongoing educational reforms led by the current administration, expressing optimism that the state’s performance will continue to improve.
The Commissioner also shared that the Governor plans to host the Abia team that recently competed in the Paralympic Games to honor their achievements.
In the area of sports, Commissioner for Sports Ananaba Nwobilor praised the Abia team for winning 31 medals, including seven gold, at the Under 15 National Youth Games in Delta State, a historic achievement for the state.
Nwobilor highlighted that the state’s growing investment in sports is paying off, with six young athletes discovered at the All Secondary School Games now being trained in Hungary. He also mentioned that two Abia Angels players have been sent on loan to a European club, and another rising star, Nmesomachi, is receiving a full scholarship in the United States for soccer.
At the briefing, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, confirmed that the planned court facilities will meet modern standards. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, was also present at the briefing.
