Nigeria is steadfast in its desire to become part of the BRICS group, a decision reiterated by Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Tuggar confirmed Nigeria’s intention to apply for BRICS membership, emphasizing the country’s commitment to the process. He emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic system necessitates thorough internal deliberations before such a significant step can be taken.
Highlighting the importance of the 2023 BRICS Summit in South Africa, Tuggar asserted Nigeria’s independence from external pressures, affirming the country’s historical stance on making sovereign decisions. Furthermore, Nigeria aims to strengthen its ties with Russia, particularly in nuclear energy cooperation, alongside initiatives in medicine, agriculture, and industrial applications of nuclear technology.

Legal expert Femi Falana underscored the urgency for Nigeria to join BRICS, advocating for the promotion of international trade using national currencies rather than the US dollar. Falana stressed that Nigeria’s participation would not only benefit the country but also positively influence other African nations, potentially enhancing economic dynamics across the continent.
The BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, seeks to reshape the global economic landscape by diversifying economic influences beyond the West. With recent expansions welcoming new members such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria eyes joining this coalition to amplify its economic presence and contribute to global economic rebalancing efforts.
