Senators Ishaku Abbo and Binos Yaroe, who represent Adamawa Northern and Southern Senatorial districts in the national assembly, respectively, have been re-elected to the Senate for a second term, according to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in Adamawa State.
According to INEC results, Reverend Binos Yaroe of Yaroe of the People’s Democratic Party received 146, 407 votes to defeat Engineer Ismaila Numan of the All Progressive Congress, APC, who received 94, 828 votes. The ADC received 2,414 votes, while the LP, NNPP, PRP, and SDP received 9,444 votes, 2,592 votes, 989 votes, and 1,667 votes, respectively.
Senator Abbo, who rose to national prominence following his sex toy assault incident, fought a tough battle to defeat his closest challenger, PDP candidate Reverend Yohanna Amos.
According to reports, Senator Ishaku Abbo, also known as (SIA), received 71,927 votes, while Amos received 61,895 votes.
Following the announcement of Abbo as the winner of the senatorial election by his supporters, who saw the contest as David versus Goliath, there was wild jubilation in Mubi.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri is believed to have fielded his party’s candidate and backed him heavily to defeat Senator Abbo, who defected from the PDP to the APC following a rift in their relationship, which many analysts believed was fueled by intra-party power struggles following the duo’s electoral victory in 2019.
The unfortunate estrangement between both men took a sharp turn shortly after Abbo had described Fintiri as a “small man holding a big office” when it was later learned that Fintiri had refused Abbo’s wish to have some of his loyalists giving sensitive appointments in the new administration following the defeat of APC Governor Jibrilla Bindow in 2019.
The outcome of the senatorial election for Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone is still pending as of the time of filing this report.
So far, results for five councils have been released, with Senator Abdulaziz Nyako, son of former Governor Murtala Nyako, trailing the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aminu Iya-Abbas, by a margin of 30,000 votes.
Abbas is expected to win the two remaining council areas of Gombi and Hong.
Abbas is from Uba in Hong Kong, and the results for the presidency and the Federal House of Representatives have shown that the PDP has had tremendous success in both councils.
Sen. Nyako, who is running for re-election to represent Adamawa Central in the Senate, served as senator from 2015 to 2019 and was instrumental in the passage of the North East Development Commission.
