D’Tigress started strong, leading 18-17 at the end of the first quarter and extending their lead to 41-28 by halftime. Australia made a comeback in the third quarter, winning it 19-10, but Nigeria dominated the final quarter with a 24-15 score, sealing their win and igniting jubilant celebrations.
This triumph marks D’Tigress’ first Olympic win in 20 years, since their victory over South Korea in a classification game at the Athens 2004 Olympics. Ranked 12th in the competition, Nigeria’s victory over the third-ranked Australians is a monumental achievement for the four-time African champions.
