President Mohamed Bazoum’s Well-Being Assured After Unsettling Incident Involving His Security.
The President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, found himself in a concerning situation after reportedly being kidnapped by his own presidential security. Fortunately, he is believed to be in good health at present.
The incident, described as a coup by some, was addressed by Catherine Colonna, who stated that it wasn’t considered as a “final” situation, according to AFP reports. She further revealed that President Bazoum had been in communication with Emmanuel Macron, and he conveyed to the coup plotters that there could be a way out if they heeded the advice of the international community.
In the aftermath of the coup, supporters of the perpetrators broke into the party headquarters of the deposed president. A smaller group of individuals, seemingly acting separately from a larger demonstration near the parliament, engaged in destructive activities, including stoning and burning vehicles, as well as setting fires. Russian flags were also displayed during this demonstration, indicating support for the coup leaders.
The soldiers who held President Bazoum in custody on the previous day now have the backing of the army. Various nations, along with Russia and the UN, have urged for his release.
President Bazoum, who assumed office two years ago, has played a significant role as a Western ally in the fight against Islamist extremists in West Africa. Niger, rich in uranium, hosts military sites for both the US and France, with both nations strongly denouncing the coup.
Amid the tense situation, the United States, through Secretary of State Antony Blinken, has assured its “unwavering support” for President Bazoum.
Additionally, the UN has halted its humanitarian efforts in Niger, but the direct cause of this suspension remains undisclosed, leaving room for further inquiry and clarification.
