South African police say nine suspected criminals involved in a string of attacks on security vans carrying cash were killed in a shootout with officers.
Bheki Cele, the police minister, visited the scene in Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg, and stated that several firearms had been recovered.

In South Africa, cash-in-transit heists, as they are known, are extremely common.
A heavily armed gang that had just targeted a security van east of Johannesburg shot dead two bystanders on Wednesday.
The majority of the attacks take place in the provinces of Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.
