Otti expressed gratitude towards Obasanjo for endorsing the State Government’s decision to repeal the pension law for former governors and their deputies.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo praised Governor Alex Otti of Abia for signing the Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pension Repeal Law during his visit to the governor in Nvosi Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area on Friday.
Obasanjo applauded Otti’s move to repeal the exorbitant pension scheme for former governors, which allowed them to own houses in Abuja and elsewhere while leaving the pensions of ordinary citizens unpaid since 2014.
He congratulated Otti for taking a stand against such practices and urged other governors to follow suit, emphasizing that such reforms are crucial for good governance.
Obasanjo acknowledged the significant work ahead for Otti in the state, advising him not to be discouraged despite potential criticism and opposition.
He stressed the importance of infrastructure development in driving socio-economic growth, particularly in Aba, the industrial heartland of the Southeast.
Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, highlighting the completion and commissioning of ten roads in Aba within the last nine months, with several more under construction.
He thanked Obasanjo for supporting the government’s decision to revoke the pension law and emphasized the importance of responsible leadership and prudent management of public funds.
Otti called for a recalibration of the cost of governance at both federal and state levels, emphasizing the need to prioritize the welfare of the people.
