The duo dedicated the performance to their late member, Takeoff, calling it a tribute to their legacy and a testament to their greatness as a group.
During the BET Awards, the duo took the stage after a commercial break. With a darkened stage and a backdrop featuring the image of a Space Shuttle, Quavo and Offset emerged from the shadows. As Takeoff’s verse from “Hotel Lobby” played, the space shuttle launched, leading them into their hit song “Bad & Boujee.”
Both Offset and Quavo have paid tribute to Takeoff since his tragic passing nearly a year ago. Takeoff, whose real name was Kirshnik Khari Ball, lost his life in a bowling alley altercation that escalated to gunfire.
Offset, who considered Takeoff as a close friend and cousin, broke his silence two weeks after the tragedy, describing it as a heartbreaking nightmare. He expressed his profound grief and longing for their shared moments, wishing he could have one last hug, laugh, smoke, and perform together.
Quavo, who is Takeoff’s uncle despite being only three years older, released the poignant single “Without You” in January, capturing his struggle and deep emotions following Takeoff’s death. In the track, he reflects on their bond and expresses a desire to reunite someday.
In February, Quavo released another song dedicated to his late nephew, sharing it with his fans shortly before its official release. The accompanying video showcased various aspects of his life, including his successful career and material possessions, but he acknowledged that he would trade it all for one more moment with Takeoff.
While trying to move forward, Quavo acknowledges that he doesn’t have all the answers but finds solace in reading the Bible and seeking guidance.
Patrick Xavier Clark, the individual arrested and charged with Takeoff’s murder in December 2022, has now been indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge. The legal proceedings continue in the case.
