A crude oil pipeline explosion in southern Nigeria has killed at least 12 people.
According to Rivers State police, the blast was caused by thieves attempting to steal oil.
Criminals frequently break into pipelines in the Niger Delta creeks and transport oil to illegal refineries.
This harms the country’s economy as well as the environment.
According to a civil society group, the number of people killed was far higher because the explosion killed everyone who had gathered at the tipping point.
