Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, Dies at 90
Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, has died at the age of 90—just two days after celebrating his birthday.
The traditional ruler reportedly passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025. His departure comes just under a year after he officially became the 43rd Olubadan, following the passing of Oba Moshood Lekan Balogun.
Oba Olakulehin received his staff of office on July 12, 2024, from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. His short reign began after stepping into the role from his previous title as the Balogun Olubadan—a significant position in the hierarchy that leads to the throne.
His ascension marked a new chapter for Ibadanland, though it was sadly brief.
As the city mourns, conversations around succession have already begun. One prominent name in the mix is former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja. Being the Otun Olubadan and the most senior among the High Chiefs, Ladoja had previously expressed readiness to step into the role.
In a 2024 radio interview on Fresh FM, Ladoja stated his intention to become the next Olubadan, as aligned with the revised chieftaincy structure that now allows for beaded crown monarchs.
As tradition and time unfold, Ibadan awaits its next chapter in leadership.
