Ghana’s Ministry of Information has requested an investigation into a live radio attack on a journalist while condemning the act and promising swift action by police in the future.
On Wednesday, Abubakar Sadiq Gariba, a broadcaster at Dagbon FM in Tamale’s northern city, was on air when two men stormed into the studio and grabbed him by the neck.
They threatened him with a slap if he said anything. The presenter then exited the studio with the two assailants.
Gariba has said that he is fine, but an argument has erupted outside the studio. One of the men, he said, was a regular panelist on his show.
According to the presenter, the man, a local politician, was irritated by Gariba’s perceived criticism of his position on a chieftaincy dispute in the area.
The Ghana Journalist Association has condemned the attack and filed a police report.
