Tijani Onwenu, son of the late music legend Onyeka Onwenu, has paid a quiet tribute to his mother, marking one year since her passing.
In a brief message shared on Instagram on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, he wrote simply: “A year ago today. RIP mum.”
Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the Elegant Stallion, passed away on July 30, 2024. Her death came not long after she performed at a birthday event for businesswoman Stella Okoli. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
A beloved figure in Nigeria’s entertainment landscape, Onyeka’s contributions to music, film, and public service left an indelible mark. Her voice, both powerful and graceful, was the soul behind timeless classics like In The Morning Light and Dancing In The Sun. She also lit up screens with memorable roles in acclaimed films such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart.
According to her family, her final performance was delivered with the same passion and vibrance that defined her career—a moment of joy before a sudden farewell.
Today, Onyeka Onwenu is remembered not just for her art, but for the legacy she leaves behind—a voice that spanned generations and a life that inspired many.
