The death toll from landslides and floods in Rwanda has risen to more than 100, according to authorities, following heavy rains in the country.
According to Rwanda’s public broadcaster, RBA, 109 people have died so far, 95 in the western province and 14 in the northern province.
Earlier, the governor of the country’s western province told the BBC that heavy rains had pounded the region “all night.”
“Many houses collapsed on people, the preliminary death toll is now 55, and there are many injured,” Governor François Habitegeko said.
He claimed that the province’s main roads, including the new road snaking along Lake Kivu, are “unusable due to landslides.”
He stated that rescue efforts were underway in remote areas, with the number of victims expected to rise.
The Rwandan meteorological agency has issued a rain warning for the entire month.
