Over 60% of Candidates Pass NECO Exams with Credit in English and Math
A total of 828,284 students, representing 60.55% of candidates, earned credit in both English Language and Mathematics in the 2024 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the National Examination Council (NECO).
NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, announced the results on Thursday at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. A total of 1,376,436 candidates took part in the exams, with the results coming just two months after the last paper was written.
Breaking down the results further, Wushishi revealed that 83.9% of the students who sat for the exam obtained five credits and above, regardless of their performance in English and Mathematics.
He also noted a significant drop in exam malpractice cases. “In 2024, 8,407 candidates were involved in malpractices, a decrease from the 12,030 cases recorded in 2023,” he added.
Wushishi shared that the exams were conducted from June 19 to July 26, 2024, while the marking process took place from August 19 to September 8, 2024. He emphasized that all necessary procedures for the release of results were completed within 55 days of the final exam.
Key Highlights of the Results:
- 1,376,423 candidates were registered for the exams, with 706,950 males and 669,473 females.
- 1,367,736 candidates sat for the exams, comprising 702,112 males and 665,624 females.
- 60.55% of candidates (828,284) earned five credits or more, including English and Mathematics.
- 83.9% of candidates (1,147,597) secured five credits or more, regardless of English and Mathematics.
In addressing the issue of malpractice, Wushishi disclosed that 40 schools across 17 states were found guilty of mass cheating and will face disciplinary actions. He also mentioned that 21 supervisors have been recommended for blacklisting due to extortion and misconduct, including instances of drunkenness.
