Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has demanded the immediate arrest and legal action against those inciting violence against the Igbo community in Lagos. This follows a wave of social media posts using a hashtag urging Igbos to leave Lagos and other South-West states.
Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, described these threats as deeply disturbing. He emphasized that such rhetoric undermines national unity and violates the Constitution, which guarantees all Nigerians the right to live and work anywhere in the country.
He called on authorities to show leadership by speaking out against divisive rhetoric and taking swift action to investigate, arrest, and prosecute those behind this dangerous agenda. Obi urged all Nigerians to stand together against such divisiveness and promote unity, tolerance, and understanding.
“I have read genocidal threats on X against the Igbo tribe, calling for their relocation. Let me pointedly warn that such rhetoric threatens our unity and is fundamentally opposed to our Constitution, which guarantees every Nigerian the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country,” Obi wrote on his official X handle. “Immediate action should be taken to investigate, arrest, and prosecute those behind this heinous agenda, serving as a deterrent to others who might consider pursuing similar paths that threaten our national security and unity.”
