The Ghana Police Service has apprehended the driver of a Hyundai truck with registration number GS 9018 – 20 in connection with an accident involving a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
According to a press release issued by the Ghana Police Service, initial investigations suggest that the driver left the vehicle unattended on the railway line, resulting in a collision with the train. The police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Earlier reports from the Ministry of Railways Development confirmed that a new DMU train collided with a stationary vehicle during a site acceptance test on the Tema Railway line.
The collision occurred as the new DMU train was approaching a curve at Km76+100 and encountered a stationary vehicle obstructing the railway track. Despite applying emergency brakes, the train was unable to halt completely and collided with the vehicle.
In a statement, the Ministry clarified that the vehicle was left without identification, and the location where it was found is not designated as an authorized level crossing.
