Pope Francis Diagnosed with Pneumonia, Vatican Confirms
Pope Francis remains under medical care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted last Friday after experiencing breathing difficulties, initially diagnosed with bronchitis. His condition is described as “complex,” prompting the cancellation of all official engagements through the weekend.
Medical evaluations, including lab tests and X-rays, indicate a “polymicrobial infection” that has compounded existing respiratory issues, including bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis. To manage his condition, doctors have prescribed a combination of antibiotics and corticosteroids.
A follow-up CT scan on Tuesday revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, necessitating additional treatment. Despite these challenges, the Vatican reports that Pope Francis remains in good spirits, balancing rest with prayer and reading.
Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support, the pope has asked for continued prayers.
Since taking office in 2013, Pope Francis has faced several health setbacks, including hernia and colon surgeries. He also relies on a wheelchair due to ongoing knee pain. His hospitalization follows several days of visible strain while delivering public addresses.
