The Presidency has announced that a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari will now take place on Thursday, July 17, at 1 p.m.
This update was shared by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, in a statement released Wednesday night. President Bola Tinubu is expected to lead his cabinet in paying tribute during the session.
The meeting was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to the state funeral held the same day in Daura, Katsina State. Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.
Meanwhile, former presidential candidate Peter Obi addressed questions surrounding his absence at the burial ceremony. Speaking to Arise TV on Wednesday, Obi explained that travel challenges kept him from attending the event on Tuesday.
“There were no available flights, and even if there were, the Katsina airport was shut due to the high number of VIPs arriving for the funeral,” he said.
Obi eventually made his way to Daura on Wednesday to personally extend his condolences to Buhari’s family.
He added, “Mourning doesn’t end in a day. Whether you came yesterday or today, it’s still part of the farewell.”
