Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has submitted a list of commissioner nominees to the House of Assembly for review and approval. The screening of these eight nominees is set to take place today (Tuesday) at the House of Assembly located in Port Harcourt, the state’s capital.
In a letter dated May 20, 2024, Assembly members supporting the governor, through the Assembly’s Clerk, Dr. G. N. Gillis-West, invited the nominees to appear before the House. The session, overseen by factional Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, is scheduled for 10 a.m.
The letter, titled “Public Announcement,” stated: “The Rivers State House of Assembly hereby invites the following commissioner-nominees for screening and confirmation as members of the Rivers State Executive Council.”
The nominees are Prince Charles Bekee, Collins Onunwo, Hon. Solomon Eke, Sir Dr. Peter Medee, Hon. Elloka Tasie Amadi, Hon. Basoene Joshua Benibo, Tabari Sydney Gbara, and Dr. Ovy Orliudeye Chinendum Chukuma.
This development follows the resignation of several commissioners allied with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. These resignations occurred after the collapse of the peace accord mediated by President Bola Tinubu.
The resigning commissioners are Prof. Chinedu Mmom (Education), Dr. Gift Worlu (Housing), Auten Ben-Chioma (Environment), Mrs. Inime Aguma (Social Welfare and Rehabilitation), Dr. Jacobson Nbina (Transport), and Dr. Gift Worlu (Housing). Their departures bring the total number of pro-Wike commissioners leaving Fubara’s cabinet to nine amid escalating tensions between the two political leaders.
These resignations, submitted on May 15, were addressed to Governor Fubara through the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo. This move came just a day after Fubara criticized his predecessor and political mentor, accusing him of leaving behind substantial debt.
