Flagship event to be held in an Arab country for the first time
The governing body of international basketball announced on Friday that Qatar will host the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
“The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has been awarded the hosting rights for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, with all games at the prestigious tournament to be played in the city of Doha,” according to a statement from FIBA.
Qatar has become the first Middle Eastern and Arab country to host the men’s basketball championship.
The Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia will co-host the 2023 edition from August 25 to September 10.
“The Central Board was impressed by QBF’s submission.” I’d like to congratulate them on behalf of the Board on the excellent work they’ve already done in putting this bid together. “We are delighted to be able to award Qatar the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027,” said FIBA President Hamane Niang.
Qatar also hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
