R-Kelly, an American R&B singer was transferred from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago to the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina, to serve his 30-year sentence.
Last week, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed the transfer.
R-Kelly was sentenced to one year in prison in February for his conviction on federal child pornography and child enticement charges in Chicago. This was on top of the 30 years he was already serving for a separate New York conviction.
Kelly was convicted of six counts of sexually abusing three women on video by a federal jury in Chicago in September 2022. The same jury, however, acquitted him of enticement charges involving two other accusers as well as seven other charges, including obstruction of justice. In these charges, he and two associates were accused of rigging his 2008 child pornography trial in Cook County.
While he is still facing a solicitation of prostitution charge in Minnesota, his federal cases have taken precedence. R. Kelly was already facing decades in prison when Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dropped sexual abuse and sexual assault charges against him last month. Her office’s limited resources, she claims, would be better spent pursuing other sexual assault cases.
Kelly, who is currently serving his sentence in North Carolina, may be eligible for release when he reaches the age of 79.
