Tension Rises at Real Madrid as Some Players Question Xabi Alonso’s Leadership
Trouble is simmering inside Real Madrid’s dressing room, with reports suggesting at least six first-team players are unhappy with manager Xabi Alonso and would prefer to see a change in leadership.
Mundo Deportivo highlights Vinicius Junior as the most vocal among those dissatisfied. The Brazilian winger reportedly reacted angrily after being substituted in last month’s El Clásico, and tensions have lingered since.
Other players reportedly unhappy with Alonso’s approach include Fede Valverde, Brahim Diaz, Rodrygo, Endrick, and Ferland Mendy. Sources say the squad has quietly split into factions, with some pushing for a new managerial direction.
On the other hand, several key players remain firmly supportive of Alonso. Summer signings Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras, along with Arda Guler, Thibaut Courtois, and Kylian Mbappe, are backing the coach despite the unrest.
Despite the internal discord, Real Madrid are still atop LaLiga, holding a slim one-point lead over Barcelona after a 2-2 draw with Elche on Sunday.
Alonso has refocused on the pitch and confirmed his squad for Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash with Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium. Kylian Mbappe and Endrick are included, while first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois remains sidelined with an injury.
