Manchester United is set to activate the one-year extension in Harry Maguire’s contract, signaling the club’s commitment to the defender despite recent challenges. Head coach Ruben Amorim has urged Maguire to step up both his performance and leadership as the team looks to rebuild its on-field presence.
Amorim, speaking at Carrington on January 3, also revealed that Amad Diallo is nearing an agreement on a new deal. He expressed confidence in Maguire’s potential to contribute more effectively, both as a player and as a leader, emphasizing the team’s need for stronger voices during challenging times.
“Harry will remain with us as we trigger the option in his contract,” Amorim confirmed. “I spoke with him this morning and made it clear—he needs to elevate his game. He’s crucial for the team, and his leadership will be pivotal. We’re happy to continue this journey with him.”
Reflecting on Maguire’s journey, Amorim highlighted the defender’s resilience through difficult periods. “Every player faces ups and downs in their career, and Harry has shown great resolve. Right now, our team lacks leadership on the pitch, and he has the qualities to fill that void.”
Amorim also called on the entire squad to rise to the occasion, emphasizing that leadership isn’t limited to one player. “If we want to compete at the highest level, everyone needs to step up, especially during tough moments. We may be struggling, but we’re still Manchester United.”
With Maguire’s extension and Diallo’s imminent new deal, United is laying the groundwork for a more unified and resilient team as they navigate the challenges ahead.
