South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile stated that the administration is hopeful that its emergency purchase programs would end the country’s energy problem.
According to local media, the board of the state-owned power provider Eskom has authorized three emergency procurement programs, which now only require the permission of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, which will hold hearings on Friday.
“In addition to appointing an electricity minister, we have announced that we are now embarking on acquiring emergency power.” “The government is adamant about keeping the lights on,” Mr Mashatile said on Thursday.
He stated that Eskom will utilize diesel in some cases to keep the lights on, but that the government was still committed to renewable energy.
His comments come shortly after Eskom published a statement on Wednesday warning that the country’s power infrastructure was severely restricted, with the possibility of protracted power disruptions over the winter.
