Senate Committee Rejects Request for Live Coverage of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Proceedings
The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has declined a request for live television coverage of the ongoing hearing involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.
Committee Chairman Senator Neda Imasuen shared this decision during an interview on Arise Television’s The Morning Show, explaining that the focus must remain on the proceedings rather than turning them into a media event.
Why the Request Was Denied
According to Imasuen, the committee aims to maintain order and avoid unnecessary distractions.
“We need to ensure that this process is handled properly within the Senate. Making it a media spectacle could shift attention away from the real issue. The committee room also has limited space, and with around 23 or 24 members present, we must stay focused,” he stated.
“A Fair Hearing Will Be Ensured”
Despite the decision to keep the session off live television, Imasuen assured that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan would be treated with fairness.
“She has the same privileges as every other senator, and her rights will be upheld. As long as I am in charge, she will receive a fair hearing. She is a friend, and I will not allow her rights to be violated,” he added.
Senate’s Stance on Allegations of Misconduct
When questioned about allegations of sexual misconduct within the Senate, Imasuen declined to comment, citing legal constraints.
“This matter is already before the court, making it sub judice. As a lawyer, I must respect legal principles and cannot discuss a case that is currently under judicial review,” he stated.
With the Senate committee proceeding behind closed doors, attention remains on how the case will unfold in the coming weeks.
